Deptula on the Predator-WSJ story

Some much needed perspective on this blow out of proportion story:
Deptula whacks Predator hack worries
I had a scheduled interview with Lt Gen David Deptula this morning, so I asked the US Air Force deputy chief of staff for intelligence, surveillance and reconaissance for his thoughts about Predator-gate (aka, the Wall Street Journal’s scoop yesterday [...]

HEETE (Highly Efficient Embedded Turbofan Engine)

Bill Sweetman produces this very interesting entry in this morning’s Ares about USAF HEETE program.
The good Monsignor Norris regretted in his August 6 report that there was no model of the USAF’s HEETE (Highly Efficient Embedded Turbofan Engine) on show at the Joint Propulsion Conference in Denver.

April Fools? Murtha Speaks of “His Plan to Buy Tankers From Both Boeing and Northrop Grumman.”
G2 Solutions @ April 1, 2009 # No Comment Yet
What a difference a year (or so) makes. We’re still waiting to see if this story isn’t an April Fool’s edition from Colin Clark at DoD Buzz. Even with expected increased acquisition costs in a split-buy scenario, this just might be the only way to politically move the KC-X saga to a place where aircraft [...]

SO it might split you say?
G2 Solutions @ January 29, 2009 # No Comment Yet
Amy Butler provides some insight into the latest on that Tanker program. It would appear that the idea of a split is making good progress. Interesting how good ideas travel very slowly.

Defense Daily: Obama adviser backs dual-buy strategy for KC-X
G2 Solutions @ October 23, 2008 # No Comment Yet
Steve Trimble reports this info from Defense Daily on his blog:
Paul Kaminski, one of the key adviser of Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) said the concept of a dual buy for the Air Force’s aerial refueling tanker competition has merit, and the campaign has not ruled out that option for the contract.

It is going to become increasingly difficult to yell at the kids for playing video games instead of doing homework since this could one day lead them to a USAF career (and still work “at home”).

Northrop’s CEO on Tanker: “CEOs who run this industry — don’t like what they see as a result of this”
G2 Solutions @ September 30, 2008 # No Comment Yet
Ron Sugar provides his views post tanker fiasco to Reuters. This is entirely correct, what tanker fiasco part 2 has done is set catastrophic new standards for DoD procurements and ways to derail them. Corrective action is needed now, so that we do not see a repeat in other programs in the near future.

Alabama on the Attack

Senator Richard Shelby, a usually fairly mild mannered gent in public, provides perhaps what is the strongest rebuttal from the State of Alabama about the tanker saga. Most people should agree that most of the post award behavior of the State of Washington congressional delegation contributed to the hysteria described by Sen Shelby in his [...]

C-One Fatty

The concept C-130XL appears (perception based comment) to have some ways to go before it can compete with A400M. Still, we believe LMT has some work to do with that wing. It will be an interesting competition no doubt, that of course, if EADS decides not to abandon all hopes to sell to DoD post [...]

Those are the fine words of John Young, Undersecretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics. Northrop CEO: Boeing got what it wanted on tanker.
Dr Sugar is pointing out a few interesting issues in this Business Week article:
- The protester (Boeing) got what it asked for, i.e. clarifications
- Northrop Grumman’s message is unequivocally targeted at the buyer, not the influencers (we are on the side of the warfighter)
- “We are not [...]
