A semi-surprise. The cost of acquisition and ownership for South Africa has tripled from an initial $2.4B to $6.2B. This cost also include temporary leasing of aircraft. The SAAF budget, already stretched from the Gripen and Hawks acquisitions, simply cannot absorb such an increase. Approximately $10 Billion according to French newspaper Liberation this morning. France alone would have to assume $3.5 Billion of that amount and is categorically opposed to a program cancellation. Liberation also states that such a cancellation would cost in the area of $7 Billion. Simply too big, and much needed, to fail.

Quoting sources close to the program, Le Figaro newspaper reports this morning that the A400M airlift aicraft will suffer further delays. First flight is scheduled for 2010 and selected deliveries could take place from 2012. However most A400M customers will need to wait until 2014 to receive production aircraft, some 3-5 years behind the original [...]

The rumor mill has plenty to say about the much troubled A400M these days. According to several sources, Airbus management has been studying a possible cancellation of the program.
Air & Cosmos has reported comments from Louis Gallois last week in which he indicated that EADS had seriously underestimated the complexity of the aircraft integration issues.
